Plan ahead
Light pollution is a stargazer's enemy, so find a vantage point away from streetlights.
Wear warm clothes and take a camping chair and blanket.
Red-light torch
Take a torch to find your way in the dark. But avoid one with a white light, as this will disrupt your night-time vision.
Instead, invest in a torch with a red light, which is less obtrusive to the eye.
Use an app
Download a free stargazing app such as Night Sky or Sky Map.
Then, point your phone at the sky, and a map of the stars and planets you're looking at will appear.
